Most computers sold in the last decade run a 64-bit version of Windows, and Windows 11 comes only in 64-bit. Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing has been released in many editions since 1987, and not all of them were written with 64-bit Windows in mind. That is why the same disc can install in a minute on one PC and refuse to start on another.

This guide explains how to check which Windows you have, why some older editions have trouble, and what to try when the program installs but will not open.

Check Whether Your Windows Is 64-bit

It takes less than a minute to find out:

  • Right-click the Start button and choose System.
  • Look at the line called System type. It says either 64-bit operating system or 32-bit operating system.
  • On Windows 11 you can also open Settings, then System, then About, and read the same line under Device specifications.

If you use Windows 11, the answer is always 64-bit, because Microsoft does not offer a 32-bit edition of it. Regular 32-bit programs still run on 64-bit Windows, so a 64-bit system on its own is not a problem.

Why Some Older Editions Struggle on 64-bit Windows

The real barrier is 16-bit software. Microsoft states that 64-bit versions of Windows do not support 16-bit programs, processes or components. Some very old setup programs were 16-bit. Windows can recognise certain 16-bit installers and swap them for a 32-bit installer automatically, but if that does not happen, the setup simply fails to run.

Requirements printed on boxes also tell you a lot. A retailer listing for the Platinum 25th Anniversary Edition names Windows XP SP3, Vista SP1 and Windows 7, while Broderbund lists Windows Vista SP1, 7, 8 and 10 for its later Anniversary Edition. An edition whose box stops at Windows XP or Vista was never tested on Windows 10 or 11. It may still work, but you should expect to adjust a few settings.

Installing on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11

A careful install avoids most problems later:

  • Save the setup file to a folder you can find again, such as Downloads, and keep it after installing. Having the full setup file on hand means you can reinstall without searching for it again.
  • Close other programs, then right-click the setup file and choose Run as administrator.
  • Keep the default install folder unless you have a reason to change it.
  • Restart the computer if the installer asks, then open the program once to create your profile.

Our step-by-step install guide covers the whole process, from the setup file to the first lesson.

If the Program Will Not Start

Start with the tool Windows provides for older software, the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter:

  • Windows 11: open Settings, then System, then Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters, and run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
  • Windows 10: open Settings, then Update & Security, then Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters, and run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.

If that does not help, set compatibility options by hand. Right-click the program's shortcut or its .exe file, choose Properties and open the Compatibility tab. The useful options are:

  • Run this program in compatibility mode for an earlier Windows version. Try Windows 7 first, or the version printed on your box.
  • Reduced color mode and Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution, which can help with garbled colours or an oversized window in old editions.
  • Disable fullscreen optimizations, which can help when the screen goes black on launch.
  • Change high DPI settings, which can fix blurry text on high-resolution laptop screens.
  • Run this program as an administrator, if the program cannot save your progress.

Click Apply, then start the program again. Change one option at a time so you know which one made the difference.

Windows 10 After the End of Support

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Your PC and your typing program keep working, but Windows 10 no longer receives security updates. If you move to Windows 11, reinstall the program there rather than copying the old folder across, and keep your setup file for that purpose.
