Mavis Beacon for PC: Choosing an Edition and Getting Started
Download Mavis Beacon for Free
Install NowMavis Beacon Teaches Typing has been a Windows program for decades, so most people who look for it "for PC" mean a desktop or laptop running Windows. The catch is that the program exists in several editions, and each one was built for the Windows versions that were current when it came out.
This page, part of a fan site about the typing tutor, sorts out which editions suit which Windows versions, how to tell what your own PC runs, how installation works and where to turn if something goes wrong.
Which Windows Versions the Editions Run On
Compatibility depends on the edition, not on the program name. Here is what published requirements show for the editions you are most likely to find:
- Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 2020, released by Encore Software in 2021: the store listing names Windows 11, Windows 10 (Home and Pro), Windows 8 and 8.1 and Windows 7, and it requires a 64-bit processor and a 64-bit version of Windows.
- Platinum 25th Anniversary Edition from Encore: a retailer listing gives Windows XP (Service Pack 3), Windows Vista (Service Pack 1) and Windows 7. Windows 8, 10 and 11 are not listed for it.
- Older numbered releases such as Version 5, Version 10 and Deluxe Version 11 date from the era of earlier Windows versions. Check the requirements printed on the box before installing one on a current PC.
For the 2020 edition the listed minimum is a Core i3 processor or better, 2 GB of RAM and 1 GB of free disk space, with a Core i5 and 4 GB of RAM recommended.
How to Pick the Right Edition for Your PC
Start by finding out what your computer runs. Open Settings, go to System and then About. That screen shows your Windows edition and version and, under system type, whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit: choose a recent edition, such as the 2020 release.
- Windows 7 or 8: the 2020 edition lists support for both, and some older editions were also built for Windows 7.
- 32-bit Windows: the 2020 edition will not run, because it needs a 64-bit system.
- An old disc you already own: compare the requirements on the box with your Windows version before you install.
Installing Mavis Beacon on a Windows PC
The exact screens differ between editions, but installation on Windows usually follows the same steps:
- Download the installer and save it to a folder you can find again, such as Downloads.
- Double-click the setup file. If Windows asks whether to allow the app to make changes, confirm only if you trust where the file came from.
- Follow the setup steps on screen and wait for the installation to finish.
- Open the program from the desktop shortcut or the Start menu, create your user profile and begin with the first lesson.

Where to Get Help
If the program will not install or start, first check the basics: that your Windows version and system type match the edition, that you have enough free disk space and that the setup file downloaded completely. Restarting the PC and running the installer again solves many problems.
For licensing, product keys or problems specific to a purchased copy, contact the publisher or the store where you bought it; for the 2020 edition the publisher is Encore Software.
